Cairns

Founded in 1876- one of the newer areas- Cairns (pronounced Kaernz or Kaenz by locals) is in the northeast territory. It became a major port with the connection to the railways to support mining, sugar cane, gold, minerals and agricultural products from the surrounding areas.
Today, Cairns is the go-to spot for watersports. The Great Barrier Reef- one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – draws thousands here annually. The Cairns Esplanade includes a swimming lagoon and picnic areas. It is also home to one of the countries topless sunbathing areas.
This is also home to several sports arenas for football (soccer to many), hockey, rugby and basketball.
With its active lifestyle, this is perfect for people of all ages to come and enjoy.

What to experience here…

  • Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. The reef can take multiple days to fully experience, but single day trips are still a good way to see this wonder and be wowed.
  • The Karanda Rainforest – Sure, the destination is awesome, but getting there is the best! The steam train is an adventure by itself. 15 tunnels, 93 curves, a bridge dating back to 1891 make this Mr. Toad’s wild ride down under. OK- just kidding- the ride has been modernized and safer.
Did I hear someone say shopping? Yep- it’s here too!
  • Like seafood? – You’re in luck! Life on the reef brings some of the finest in the world and in abundance!
  • Crystal Cascades and Josephine Falls allow for swimming in the rainforest lagoon there. So lush and green you will think you stepped back in time. Even if swimming isn’t for you- a stroll on one of the paths will let you enjoy the exceptional foliage and splendor
  • Not one for land adventures? Do it all by air! Maybe a hot air Balloon ride over the Atherton Timberlands. Want more? Skydive the Great Barrier Reef!
Too much? Then a chopper ride over the entire region may be for you. The Reef, the beaches Baron Falls and the rainforest while sitting back and just looking.
  • The most relaxing and a favorite of many- a nice walk on the Oceanic Walk or a stroll to Rusty’s Market or a stop at Blackbeard’s Espresso to mingle with locals.
