It’s native population – the Aborigines- are the old consistent civilization on earth, dating back over 50,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive were the Dutch, followed by the Spanish and eventually the British in the 1600’s. Like most areas of the world, the Europeans brought disease and pestilence to the natives on the island for the first time.

The colonists established gold mining, crops like cotton, tobacco and sugar. It was then that the infamous prisoners and convicts were introduced to the population. Today, the country’s diversity is among the greatest in the world.
