SAINT LUCIA

Louanalao – is what the Arawak Indians called the island in 200 AD. It means Island of the Iguanas. It was the Carib Indians that settled Saint Lucia in 800 AD until the 1600’s when the Europeans took over turning into a trade port.

Today, the culture is English, Dutch with heavily French influences. This resort destination is a favorite of the rich and famous because it is far from the U.S. mainland, keeping many tourist at bay. Grand estates, yachts and luxury hotels makes this a dream destination. That is not to say it is not available to the “average Joe”. With some mid-range properties and cruise stops, Saint Lucia is for everyone.

What to do if you don’t have your own yacht (or even if you do!):

  • Saint Lucia Jazz Festival – offers some great sounds form around the world.
  • Carnival! – June or July – usually the third week in July. Come and join the locals in a colorful and festive celebration. The fantastic costumes make the experience worth it.
  • Nature figures prominently on most islands, but here in Saint Lucia it takes on a whole new meaning. Lush forests of tropical greenery, waterfalls, gorgeous beaches, and views at every turn make this paradise.
  • The food – like most destinations, local cuisine is a must try. Here the French influence adds that continental flare with the island traditions,
  • Snorkeling and SCUBA diving are among the world’s best here. Sailing by yacht or catamaran around the island in pristine waters with crystal blue skies above is just another of the things to enjoy. Tet Paul Trail, Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Park will prime you for the next days trip to the spa. Tranquility and in most cases, unrivaled views make this the prefect way to begin and end your time here.
