Portugal

Located in Southern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, adjacent to Spain, this European gem has become a new hot spot with its history and Mediterranean climate. Settled in 1000 BC by the Phoenicians, but its original inhabitants date back as early as 4000-2000 BC! There are, however cave painting dating back to 18,000 – 13,000 BC with no designation as to their authors or known peoples

Ruled by the Celtics, the Romans, and the Moors. It was put on the map in the 15th century for its ports and trade routes to India. Magellan- The first to circumvent the globe was Portuguese.
Today, it’s best known for wine and seafood. Madeira wine is one of the most popular wines, from the Madeira Islands.

Of course, Lisbon is a major destination for travelers, but we are hoping to offer other options here from the top of the country to the southern tip.

PORTO

A northern peninsula coastal city very popular right now with tourist because of its charm, stately bridges, and wine. The Medieval Ribeiro (riverside) District is especially a fav with cobble stone streets, dotted with clubs and cafés

What to see, where to go…
After you’ve relaxed at the beach, try…

  • Porto Rewind Cais de Ribeira is picturesque and fun to explore. So nice, even the locals hang out here in their leisure time.
  • Dom Louis I Bridge – It serves as a connection to the commercial center of town, but if you look closely, you will see a trademark design by its architect. German engineer, Thoephile Seyrig…he’s known for the Eiffel Tower and the grid work is the same.
  • The Churches– I know, it’s Europe and churches are a big deal everywhere. However- must see; Church of Santa Clara, and Clerigos (Baroque) Cathedral – trust us- you won’t be sorry!
  • Foz do Douro – Now a trendy area with food, views, and great night life accentuated with palms and pines like the South of France. Once was an active lighthouse that served for over 120 years ( just recently decommissioned)
  • The Wine– sure the entire country is a wine lovers paradise, but have you put the name with the famous wine from this region? Why it’s the creamy, silky …Port!

COIMBRA

Another seaside city- on central coast this time. Like most of Portugal, Coimbra’s past dates pre-medieval. Over the centuries this was even the Capital 1131-1252 at one time. Its architecture is Roman and luckily, much of the old is still in use today! There are many UNESCO sites here.

Like in its prime, Coimbra is still vibrant and essential to the economy. But you come here for the beauty and the people. The climate is typical for the region with mild winters and summers in the 80’s.

Why Am I here?

  • Go back to school: The University of Coimbra is a former palace built in 1290! As a result, this looks like no educational facility you have ever seen.
  • The Monastery of Santa Cruz does not require a lot of time, but you should at least drive by it for the ornate edifice that is its front – WOW!
  • Enough with old buildings! – The Mondego River Cruise takes you by the city with panoramic views you cannot appreciate on land. Add a little romance with an even cruise featuring local performances of Fado- a local style of music
  • Walk the neighborhoods. Especially that of the Centre of the walled City. You will feel like you have stepped back in time, but the price of a glass of wine will bring you back to reality.
  • Have some fun! The Portugal Dos Pequenito (the little ones Portugal) an entire city in miniature! It’s not just for kids- adults love it too!
  • The Beaches! You are a one of the premier seaside in the world- Go to the beach! Relax, shop, and enjoy seaside activities. It’s your vacation!

FARO

Now you’re in the southern most region of the country.

By Portuguese standards, this is a large city at 118,000 people. Certainly, a lot more than when it was inhabited in 4 BC. But it was the Romans between 2-8th century that brought it to life. Then the Moors reigned for 500 years during which time the Jewish settlers wrote the Old Testament we know today.

The Moors were expelled in 1219.

Today- the city is divided into two districts – coastal – and hills & valleys. Most think of the beach side because of its attraction for tourism. Over 45 airlines fly here. And along with boats and ferries, visitors explore the islands along the coast. But don’t overlook time in the “other” district.

What to experience in Faro?

  • Sports! Start at the 35,00 seat Estadio Algarve– home to 2 major football teams (soccer for the gringos!) Water sports, golf, air – you decide
  • Nature! Ria Formosa National Preserve – a boat ride (or it can be driven) away to see Storks, Flamingos Stilts and so much more
  • Ready for the beach? This is Portugal! These are some of the best in the world. I’m sure you can figure out what level you want – from quiet and peaceful to….?
  • Architecture is underrated here. The opulence and overt grandeur of the Palacio de Estoi can overwhelm some. But add in the new, innovative styles and the city comes to life!
  • Food…Wine- It’s Portugal! You’re at the seaside -try the specialty of the region – Caldereta – seafood stew! You may never use beef again!
